Awards & Scholarships
Awards
One of the highlights of each conference is the occasion at which the West Virginia Library Association recognizes constructive accomplishments and meritorious achievement in West Virginia library service, publishing, innovation, and writing. The Resolutions and Awards Committee selects recipients for the awards. Awards may be conferred on an outstanding West Virginia library trustee, a librarian, a library, an outstanding citizen who has made a significant contribution to library development, a publisher, or author.
Four types of awards are given:
Certificate of Merit for service to libraries and librarianship in West Virginia.
The Dora Ruth Parks Award for long and outstanding service to libraries and librarianship.
Book Award for Outstanding Publication. It has been the policy to present this award to a West Virginia author. However exceptions may be made for contributions to Appalachian literature.
Frederic J. Glazer Library Innovation Award for demonstrated success in planning and execution of an innovative service, project or program that has significantly impacted the patrons of the library. This award should recognize an innovation from the previous calendar year. Restriction: This award should not recognize individual accomplishments, honor routine operations, functions or programs, or advance a particular agenda (political, religious, philosophical, etc.).
Scholarships
Since 1990, the West Virginia Library Association has worked to increase the number of librarians in the State of West Virginia by awarding scholarships to WVLA members pursuing a masters’ degree from an ALA-accredited institution or approved library certificate program. Money in the continuing education and scholarship funds is donated by members of WVLA and others. Please consider donating to the fund when renewing your WVLA membership.
WVLA members interested in applying for a scholarship should complete the application form and supply the supporting documents by the deadline shown below. The Continuing Education and Scholarship Committee welcomes applications from WVLA members for continuing education workshops, conferences, and online workshops as well as applications for scholarships for the next academic year. Applications for scholarships will be considered once a year with awards made at the Annual Conference. Please see the application links below for further requirements of the application process.
