| Stonewall Jackson Resort: Location of the 2010 Annual WVLA Conference |
The West Virginia Library Association (WVLA) was established in 1914 to promote library service and librarianship in West Virginia. Since then, WVLA has offered leadership in the development and expansion of library services of all types. Through the work of its Divisions, Roundtables, and Committees, WVLA advocates for library issues, distributes public information, and develops continuing education opportunities. WVLA recognizes outstanding achievements in librarianship and literature through an awards program and encourages the development of new library professionals by granting scholarships. WVLA fosters communication among members through an online discussion list and a bi-monthly newsletter, WV Libraries. We invite you to join WVLA and become a member of our our growing, active, and informed association. |

West Virginia Library Snapshot Day April 21, 2010 (from the March 2010 issue of West Virginia Libraries)
Do you remember “A Day in the Life of West Virginia Libraries”? April 21, 2010 is the 21st century version – and it is going national. WVLC has responded to a request from ALA and COSLA (Chief Officers of State Library Agencies) to schedule a Snapshot Day during April.
Library Snapshot Day provides a way for libraries of all types to show what happens in a single day in their libraries. How many books are checked out? How many people receive help finding a job? Doing their taxes? Doing their homework? This initiative provides an easy means to collect statistics, photos and stories that will enable library advocates to prove the value of their libraries to decision-makers and increase public awareness.
WVLC is planning a special Snapshot Day web page (wvsnapshotday.org) where promotional materials, survey forms, and eventually comments, numbers, pictures and videos will be posted. Every academic, public, school and special library in West Virginia is encouraged to participate. The larger the numbers, the greater the impact.
Start planning now. Line up your photographers and videographers. Plan a special event for the day so that you can capture it in story and photos.
Watch the Snapshot Day web page (http://www.wvsnapshotday.org) and WVLC E-Bulletin for additional developments.
Report on Legislative Day with Photos
Energetic, motivated, focused library supporters turned out in large numbers for Legislative Day at the Capitol on February 4. Thankfully the weather was pleasant, literally a brief interlude sandwiched between the bookends of severe snowstorms earlier and later that week. Library exhibits filled both ends of the upper rotunda hallways, supporters met with their delegates and senators, and the day culminated with a packed house reception at the Culture Center. 41 delegates, 7 senators, 40 complimentary ticket holders, and 227 library supporters attended the reception. The food was delicious, John Lilly’s background music pleasant, and the library politickin’ engaging. Read the rest of the report. View the photos.
